What is cannabinoid CB9 and how is it produced? Properties, effects and availability

What is CB9 and how is it made?

CB9 is a cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant, it is a derivative of CBD (cannabidiol). More than a hundred cannabinoids have already been found in cannabis, and CB9 is another example that this herb hides far more than we may have previously thought.

The formation of CB9 is due to a complex chemical reaction in cannabis in which other cannabinoids - CBD and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as delta-9) - act as precursors. Research is currently underway to unravel the exact mechanism of formation. Unlike other cannabinoids, CB9 does not tend to crystallise, which affects its solubility in products, stability and use.

The second most abundant cannabinoid in cannabis, CBD shares a natural five-carbon tail and similar chemical structure with CB9. However, even though CB9 is a derivative of CBD, it has a modified structure. Even a tiny change in chemical structure is known to cause the effects of cannabinoids to be different. The cannabinoid CB9 has a certain variation that causes it to have a psychoactive effect, whereas CBD has a molecular structure that does not produce a psychoactive effect.

Features of CB9

Although the cannabinoids CBD and H4CBD are similar in structure to CB9, this cannabinoid stands out among them for its psychoactive properties. As this is a newly discovered compound, detailed scientific analysis, improved detection methods and careful consideration of regulation will be required.

Conventional analytical procedures using HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography) may not be sufficient for the detection of CB9. Because of this, the scientific community faces a real challenge.

Effects of CB9

Compared to delta-9, CB9 exhibits mild psychoactive properties. In terms of psychoactive effects, CB9 is reported to have similar effects to HHC and delta-8 (it is a psychoactive cannabinoid with similar effects to delta-9 but with lower affinity for the CB1 receptor).

CB9 is likely to induce euphoria, relaxation and slightly altered sensory perception.

Possible benefits

Currently, we have little information on the potential benefits of CB9, as research on this cannabinoid is just starting. But already this compound seems to open up extraordinary possibilities for scientific and medical research.

Much of the effects of cannabinoids are based on how they interact with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in our body. This complex cellular signalling network regulates important functions such as pain perception, sleep, mood, memory, immunity, movement coordination and appetite.

There are two main types of endocannabinoid receptors in the ECS - CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are mainly found in the brain and nervous system, while CB2 receptors are found in the immune system, digestive tract and other organs.

CBD works as a modulator of CB1 and CB2 receptors and also affects serotonin, vanilloid, and adenosine receptors. CB9 is thought to interact with the ECS differently, and this accounts for its unique effects. The interaction of CB9 with the ECS is still under investigation.

Similar to other cannabinoids, CB9 could exhibit the following properties:

  • sedative effects (sleep promotion)
  • anti-inflammatory action
  • relief of pain symptoms
  • neuroprotective action
  • promoting overall mental well-being (counteracting stress and anxiety)

Availability CB9 products

As research on CB9 is currently limited and detection and production is also difficult, CB9 products are not as readily available as other cannabinoids.

The e-shop offers CB9 spirits, flowers, hash, CB9 vapes and CB9 gummies. In the future, CB9 could be offered in products similar to CBD, i.e. oils, capsules or topicals.

Once we know more about CB9, companies could begin to develop specific products using the unique properties of this compound. It is reported that CB9 is better tolerated than H4CBD when vaporised, which could increase its user appeal.

At the moment, it is not entirely clear what the legal status of CB9 is. Depending on how legislation evolves in each country, the availability and commercialisation of CB9 products will change. Given the constant changes in cannabis laws, CB9 could become an alternative in countries where other cannabinoids such as HHC, HHC-P and THCP are restricted or banned.

Conclusion

CB9 is derived from CBD and stands out for its psychoactive properties. Although this cannabinoid faces some challenges, it has potential for both scientific research and the commercial market. With its unique chemical structure and mild psychoactive effects, it could provide new insights into the mechanisms of action of cannabinoids and open up a whole new era of their use.

It is now essential to conduct clinical trials to evaluate its efficacy, safety and method of use.
