What is THCPO?

Tetrahydrocannabiphorol acetate, abbreviated THCPO, is produced by modifying the cannabinoid THCP. The cannabinoid THCP was discovered by Italian scientists in 2019, and two years later the acetyl group "O" was added to this cannabinoid, and THCPO saw the light of day. While THCP can be found in small amounts directly in the cannabis plant, THCPO is a semi-synthetic cannabinoid that is produced in the lab; you would look for it in vain in nature.

While the popular tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) has a side chain of only five carbons, THCP and THCPO have seven. By lengthening the alkyl chain and adding acetate, the potency as well as the resistance of the cannabinoid is increased.

How does THCPO work?

The cannabinoids THCP and THCPO bind strongly to CB1 endocannabinoid receptors in the brain. THCP has been reported to have 33 times more activity at CB1 receptors and 10 times more activity at CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system than delta-9 THC, and it is thought that THCPO could be even more active, with strong binding to CB1 receptors in the brain producing psychotropic effects. 

Some believe that THCPO is up to 30 times more potent than delta-9 THC, but there are no scientific studies yet to confirm this information.

Effects of THCPO

THCPO induces states of euphoria, relaxation and release. These effects can last for several hours. It is possible that THCPO could have some therapeutic properties similar to THC, such as stimulating appetite or helping with nausea and vomiting. 

However, this can only be confirmed (or refuted) by thorough research and clinical trials, which will have to wait.

And what side effects can occur after taking THCPO? Probably the same as for other cannabinoids with psychoactive properties, so drowsiness, anxiety, red eyes, dry mouth or paranoia may occur, especially if too high a dose is taken or when combined with other substances.

THCPO vapes, cartridges, hash, gummies and flowers with THCPO distillate are already available on the US and European markets. You won't find THCPO in our e-shop at the moment, but you can choose from a range of other interesting cannabinoids such as THCP, THCV, HHC-O, HHC-P or HHC.

It is likely that THCPO will soon spread throughout Europe, as well as other new cannabinoids.
