THCV: A cannabinoid with a big future

What is THCV?

THCV (tetrahydrocannabivarin) is one of more than 150 cannabinoids that have been identified so far in the cannabis plant. It is a homologue of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). The molecular structure of both compounds is similar, but THCV has a two-carbon shorter side chain. This slight difference in chemical formula results in different properties and effects. One of the main differences is that THCV is not psychoactive in small doses.

The cannabinoid THCV is not a newcomer to the cannabis world, having been discovered in 1973, but it is not yet nearly as popular and well researched as some other cannabinoids such as CBD.

Native African strains of Cannabis sativa contain the largest amounts of THCV. THCV-rich strains include:

  • Doug's Varin
  • Pineapple Purps
  • Durban Poison
  • Jack The Ripper
  • Power Plant

It should be noted, however, that some of these strains are also high in THC. Cannabis can currently be grown in the Czech Republic up to a maximum limit of 1 % THC.

How does THCV work?

We have very little information on the effects of THCV on the body and mind, especially when used for long periods of time. In terms of short-term effects, some of the most commonly reported are:

  • an increase in energy
  • improved concentration
  • appetite suppression
  • reduction of inflammation
  • changes in perception (at higher doses)

The side effects of THCVs have not yet been mapped, based only on previous experience with cannabinoids with similar chemical structures.

Like other cannabinoids, THCV affects our endocannabinoid system via the endocannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2.

THCV as a weight loss aid

Perhaps the most interesting thing that scientists have come up with is the ability of THCV to affect appetite and weight. Research shows that THCV reduces appetite and increases satiety. In fact, this is how it differs from the psychoactive cannabinoid THC (delta-9-THC), which in turn stimulates appetite.

Several studies have suggested that THCV works on a similar principle to anti-obesity drugs. The advantage is that it does not cause serious psychiatric side effects like some of these drugs. A 2013 study published in the scientific journal Nutrition & Diabetes reported that THCV has a positive effect on lowering blood glucose and liver triglycerides.

Clinical tests conducted in obese mouse models have shown that THCV also restores insulin sensitivity. In rodents, THCV of plant origin resulted in weight loss, reduced food intake, decreased body fat, increased energy expenditure and decreased hepatic triglycerides

In 2016, a study was published that evaluated the safety and efficacy of THCV and CBD in patients with type 2 diabetes. The cannabinoids THCV and CBD were found to be well tolerated in type 2 diabetes. In addition, THCV reduced glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Clearly, much more extensive and detailed research is needed before all the potential benefits and risks are known. But perhaps it is the cannabinoid THCV that will cause a breakthrough in the development of active substances to help with weight loss, diabetes and obesity.

Other benefits of THCV

THCV also binds to the endocannabinoid receptor CB2, which promotes bone tissue formation. Because THCV can regulate bone cell activity through this receptor and also has the potential to reduce inflammation, it could be a useful adjunct in the treatment of osteoporosis. A study published in 2012 suggests that THCV also stimulates collagen production in bone marrow cells.

At the same time, THCV, like some other cannabinoids (such as CBD), has the potential to alleviate symptoms of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease. THCV could also improve neuropsychiatric diseases such as schizophrenia, anxiety and depression.

Finally, of course, we must mention that all these studies, although scientifically sound, must be taken with a pinch of salt. There is not yet enough relevant information on efficacy, safety and adverse effects. Serious illnesses should always be consulted with a doctor and the recommended treatment should be followed.

How to obtain THCV?

If you would like to try the benefits of the cannabinoid THCV, we have good news for you. We have new cartridges that contain 20% THCV, 60% CBG and 20% CBN. What's more, you can try this great and balanced mix of cannabinoids in several variants, with terpenes from the cannabis strains Green Crack, Sour Diesel, Super Lemon Haze and Blue Dream

Summary

THCV is a cannabinoid with a great future. It can promote an increase in energy, improve concentration and suppress appetite. Research suggests that THCV could be a useful supportive agent in the treatment of obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis, and alleviating symptoms of some neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases. In small doses, it acts as an antagonist of CB1 receptors in the brain, which means that it is not psychoactive, and may even block some of the adverse effects of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). Beware, however, that in higher doses THCV can also produce psychoactive effects.
